Student to Permanent Resident Visas, Regional VIctoria Australia There has been a huge shakeup in the student visa program. The introduction of the SC485 visa and the requirement for work experience as part of a successful skills assessment for many occupations has made the pathway to permanent residency much less certain for many students.
However, there are concessions for students who held a SC485 visa on 8 February 2010 and who apply for Permanent Residency before 31 December 2012. Also there are transitional arrangements if you held a SC572, 573 or 574 visa on 8 February 2010 and intend to apply for a SC485 before 31 December 2012. If you are in this position it is important to get your visa application right, whether it is for the SC485 visa or one of the onshore permanent visas, as this is a short window of opportunity.
Increasingly international students are in the same boat as other applicants for permanent residency visas - apply for employer or state sponsored visas and/or temporary work visas.
